SHE IS OFTEN CITED AS the world’s most beautiful woman, and the sexiest woman alive, but these days, Hollywood actress, director and special envoy to the United Nations Refugee Agency, Angelina Jolie proves to be so much more than this. As she moves further and further towards philanthropy and politics, public interest in her and the contents of her life continue to expand. One way that the intensity of this interest can be measured is through online searches about the 44-year-old actress and star of the movies ‘Maleficent’, ‘Changeling’, ‘Salt’ and ‘Girl, Interrupted’.

Firstly, the name “Angelina Jolie” is searched almost 3.5 million times per month. Simultaneously, some of the most intense search queries are about her ethnicity and family. Approximately 3,000 people Google the terms, “Angelina Jolie ethnicity, nationality, race, background”, while a further 26,000 search the terms, “Angelina Jolie parents, family, mother, father”, each month. The total number of searches about the celebrity's background and ethnicity adds up to over 342,000 per year.

ANGELINA’S BACKGROUND

The Hollywood star was born Angelina Jolie Voight, on June 4, 1975, in Los Angeles California. Her father is American actor Jon Voight, while her mother, the late Marcheline Bertrand, was an actor and producer. Voight’s ethnic ancestry is part-German and part-Eastern European (Hungary and former Czechoslovakia), while Angelina’s mother -— who died of ovarian and breast cancer in 2007 — was of French Canadian, Dutch and German heritage. She also possessed part-Native American (Iroquois) ethnicity through her father’s ancestral line. Like many other Hollywood stars such as Zoe Saldana and Rosario Dawson, Angelina’s beauty derives from a complex multi-ethnic mix that spans centuries.

Jolie’s mother was 20 years old when she met and married Voight — then a 32-year-old Oscar-winner — but the couple separated when Angelina was six months old, after which she lived with her mother and brother Jamie in Los Angeles. Her mother gave up acting to raise her two children, and the family lived in a series of rented apartments in New York. When Jolie was eleven, Bertrand moved back to L.A., where Angie and Jamie attended Beverly Hills High School.
